The regimen involves an initial course of the glycopeptide antibiotic vancomycin, which is used to reduce the abundance of potentially pathogenic or non-normative gut bacteria. This is followed by a fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) to introduce a diverse and healthy microbial community from a donor. The therapeutic rationale is based on the hypothesis that modulating the gut microbiome can influence the gut-brain axis, thereby alleviating both gastrointestinal and behavioral symptoms associated with ASD.
