Fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) developed by the University of Alberta is a microbiome-based biologic therapy investigated for the treatment of mild-to-moderate Crohn's disease. The active ingredient consists of the complete fecal microbiota from screened healthy donors, which includes a diverse range of bacteria and other microorganisms. The therapy's proposed mechanism of action is to restore healthy gut microbial diversity and composition in patients with Crohn's disease, thereby correcting the characteristic dysbiosis, reducing inflammation, and re-establishing microbial homeostasis. The treatment was administered via an initial colonoscopy followed by weekly oral capsules for 7 weeks. [3, 5] A multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (NCT03078803), conducted in collaboration with the University of Calgary and McMaster University, was terminated early for futility after the therapy failed to meet its primary endpoint of inducing clinical and endoscopic remission. [3, 4, 5]
