Overview

Fecal microbiota transplantation as investigated by Aarhus University is a biologic, live biotherapeutic product therapy being studied for the treatment of recurrent *Clostridioides difficile* infection (rCDI). It is a clinical research intervention consisting of processed fecal material containing live gut microbiota from healthy, screened donors. The mechanism of action involves restoring a healthy gut microbiome, which inhibits the growth of *C. difficile*. In a randomized clinical trial at Aarhus University Hospital (NCT02743234), the intervention was administered as a frozen-thawed preparation via colonoscopy or a nasojejunal tube, following pretreatment with vancomycin. The trial demonstrated a 92% clinical resolution rate for this approach, which was significantly higher than for fidaxomicin (42%) or vancomycin (19%) monotherapies. [15]
