Overview
Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) developed by Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli IRCCS is an investigational microbiome-based therapy being evaluated for the treatment of refractory hepatic encephalopathy in patients with liver cirrhosis. The therapy involves the transfer of a healthy donor's fecal microbial community into the recipient's gastrointestinal tract to restore a balanced gut microbiota. In this specific program, the FMT is delivered via intestinal gastro-resistant oral capsules, sometimes preceded by an initial colonoscopy-based infusion. The goal is to reduce the production and absorption of neurotoxins like ammonia by altering the gut microbiome composition and reducing systemic inflammation, thereby improving cognitive function and clinical outcomes in patients who have failed standard therapies like rifaximin and lactulose.
