Overview

An investigational fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) therapy studied by Prof. Benoit Guery at the University Hospital of Lausanne, Switzerland, in a Phase III randomized controlled trial called FENDER. [4, 5, 6] The trial compares FMT administered as oral capsules following standard antibiotic treatment (vancomycin or fidaxomicin) against standard antibiotics alone for preventing recurrence in patients with a first episode or first recurrence of Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI). [2, 8] The therapy is a biologic treatment that involves administering fecal matter from healthy donors to restore gut microbiota balance. The active ingredient is the complete microbiota from donor stool. [3, 10] This study evaluates early intervention with FMT for CDI, in contrast to the established use of FMT for multiple recurrent CDI. [8]
