Overview

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a biologic therapy being developed by the Medical University of Graz for the treatment of steroid-refractory acute gastrointestinal graft-versus-host disease (GI-aGvHD). The therapy involves transferring the complete fecal microbiota from healthy donors to patients to restore physiological gut microbiota. The primary mechanism is the restoration of gut microbiota diversity and composition, which is severely disrupted in GI-aGvHD. This aims to re-establish colonization resistance and the presence of beneficial commensal bacteria, which can modulate intestinal epithelial cell damage and immune responses. An ongoing Phase 3 trial sponsored by the Medical University of Graz is evaluating this therapy in patients with acute gastrointestinal GvHD after allogeneic stem cell transplantation. [8]
