Overview

This investigational fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) therapy is being developed by the Microbiome Health Research Institute (operating as OpenBiome) for the treatment of pediatric malnutrition. The intervention, evaluated in the THRIVE (Transfer of Healthy Gut Flora for Restoration of Intestinal Microbiota Via Enema) study, involves the administration of healthy donor human intestinal microbiota via a rectal catheter enema. The goal is to repair the immature gut microbiome typically found in children with severe acute malnutrition (SAM) or moderate acute malnutrition (MAM), which often fails to recover even after standard nutritional supplementation. By restoring a diverse and healthy microbial community, the therapy aims to improve nutritional outcomes and clinical recovery in children who have failed standard-of-care nutritional therapy.
