Overview

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is an investigational live biotherapeutic therapy being developed by Rambam Health Care Campus for the eradication of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) colonization. [3] Delivered orally via capsules, this therapy introduces fecal material from a healthy donor to restore a healthy gut microbiome. [2, 3] The underlying mechanism is believed to be the competitive exclusion of pathogenic CRE by the newly introduced commensal microorganisms. [2] CRE are classified as an "urgent threat level" and are associated with high mortality rates (40-50%) in hospital-acquired infections. [3] This decolonization strategy aims to reduce an individual's risk of developing a CRE infection and to prevent the spread of these multi-drug resistant organisms in healthcare settings. [3]
