Overview
Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is an investigational microbial therapy being evaluated by the Shanghai Mental Health Center for the treatment of Anorexia Nervosa (AN). The therapy involves the oral administration of encapsulated fecal matter from healthy donors to patients with AN to restore gut microbial diversity and stability. The underlying mechanism is based on the gut-brain axis, where intestinal dysbiosis is thought to contribute to the psychological and physiological symptoms of eating disorders. By repopulating the gastrointestinal tract with commensal bacteria, FMT aims to improve nutritional status, facilitate weight gain, and alleviate psychiatric symptoms associated with AN. In clinical trials, the therapy is administered as a short-term intensive course of capsules to hospitalized patients, often in combination with conventional treatment.
