Overview

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a therapeutic procedure involving the transfer of fecal matter from a healthy donor into the gastrointestinal tract of a recipient to restore a healthy microbial balance. This specific application, investigated by the Chinese University of Hong Kong, focuses on the eradication of intestinal colonization by multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs), specifically carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE). The mechanism of action relies on the restoration of gut microbiota diversity, which provides colonization resistance through competitive exclusion, production of antimicrobial metabolites, and modulation of the host's mucosal immunity. In the context of the pilot study conducted by the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the FMT infusion is administered via esophagogastroduodenoscopy (OGD) to target the upper gastrointestinal tract.
