Overview

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a biologic therapy investigated by the University Hospital Tuebingen in the TOCSIN clinical trial (NCT01942447) for the treatment of recurrent or refractory Clostridium difficile infection (CDI). [9] The procedure involves the administration of fecal matter from a healthy donor into the gastrointestinal tract of a patient. [2, 4] This process aims to restore a healthy gut microbiome, thereby re-establishing colonization resistance against the pathogenic C. difficile bacteria and breaking the cycle of recurrent infection. [2, 4, 14] The 'active ingredient' is the complex community of microorganisms, including bacteria and their metabolites, present in the donor stool. [2]
