Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) developed by the University of Alberta is an investigational therapy for obesity and metabolic syndrome. This therapy involves the transfer of gut microbes from lean, healthy donors to individuals with these conditions. The rationale is based on observations that the gut microbial composition differs between lean and obese individuals, and that altering the microbiome can impact metabolic health. [4, 6] The treatment is administered orally in a pill form and is studied in conjunction with dietary fiber supplementation. The fiber is intended to help sustain the beneficial microbial changes introduced by the transplant. [4] A Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT03477916) is evaluating the effects of this combination therapy on insulin sensitivity, weight, quality of life, and other metabolic parameters. [4]
