Overview

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is an investigational live biotherapeutic therapy being studied for psychiatric and gastrointestinal disorders. [8] It involves transferring gut bacteria and other microbes from a healthy, screened donor to a patient's gut, with the goal of restoring a balanced microbial community. [8] This approach is based on the growing understanding of the microbiome-gut-brain axis, a communication pathway that links the gut and the brain. [2, 9] Research led by Dr. Valerie Taylor at the University of Calgary is specifically evaluating the effectiveness, safety, and tolerability of oral FMT (in capsule form) for adults with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), including those with co-occurring Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). [2, 3] A Phase 2/3 clinical trial is underway to assess if modulating the gut microbiome with FMT can alleviate symptoms of depression and IBS. [3, 14]
