Overview

This investigational fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) therapy was developed by researchers at the University of California, Irvine, specifically for the treatment of refractory recurrent urinary tract infections (rUTI) in women. The therapy involves the administration of a single FMT via a retention enema, utilizing fecal microbiota sourced from healthy donors. The mechanism of action is based on the hypothesis that rUTIs are often seeded by uropathogens residing in a dysbiotic gut microbiome. By restoring gut species diversity and reducing the abundance of these uropathogens, the therapy aims to break the cycle of reinfection. A pilot study (FDA IND #17380) conducted in 2018 demonstrated safety and potential efficacy in reducing UTI frequency, with several participants no longer meeting the criteria for recurrent UTI post-treatment.
