Overview

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) combined with partial enteral nutrition (PEN) is an investigational combination therapy being evaluated by Tongji Hospital for the treatment of active pediatric Crohn's disease. FMT involves the administration of processed stool from healthy donors to restore microbial diversity and stable community structure in the recipient's gut. PEN is a dietary strategy where a significant portion of caloric needs is met through specialized enteral formulas, supplemented by a restricted diet. This dual approach aims to induce clinical remission by correcting dysbiosis and reducing exposure to dietary antigens that may trigger intestinal inflammation. The therapy is being explored as a potential first-line treatment to avoid or delay the use of systemic immunosuppressive agents in children.
