Overview

Fecal transplant, also known as fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), is a medical procedure in which processed stool from a healthy donor is transferred into the gastrointestinal tract of a recipient. The primary goal is to restore the balance and diversity of beneficial gut microorganisms in patients whose native gut flora has been disrupted—most commonly due to recurrent or severe Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) infection that has not responded to standard antibiotic therapy[1][3][7]. The transplanted material contains thousands of live bacteria and other microbes that can outcompete pathogenic organisms and reestablish a healthy microbial ecosystem in the colon[1][5]. FMT can be administered via colonoscopy, enema, nasogastric/nasoenteric tube, upper endoscopy, or oral capsules[2][4][5]. While currently approved primarily for recurrent C. diff infection due to its high efficacy (about 85–90% success rate), it is being investigated for other conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), metabolic syndrome, neurological disorders like Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis, autoimmune diseases, and more[6][7][8].
