Overview

Fedrilate is a small molecule centrally acting antitussive and mucolytic agent. Developed by UCB and patented in the 1960s and 1970s, it is used to treat cough and respiratory conditions requiring the clearance of mucus. The drug acts on the central nervous system to suppress the cough reflex and also possesses mucolytic properties to reduce the viscosity of bronchial secretions. While it was never introduced to the United States market, it has been marketed in the Netherlands under the brand name Tussefan, both as a single agent and in combination with guaifenesin (Tussefan expectorans).
