Overview

Fel d 1 is the primary secretoglobin protein and major allergen produced by cats (*Felis catus*), primarily within their sebaceous and salivary glands. In clinical research, particularly in studies sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), purified Fel d 1 is utilized as a standardized biological challenge agent to induce symptoms of allergic rhinitis in sensitized individuals. This application allows for the comparative evaluation of allergen exposure methodologies, such as Nasal Allergen Challenge (NAC) and Environmental Exposure Chambers (EEC). Mechanistically, Fel d 1 triggers allergic responses by cross-linking allergen-specific IgE antibodies bound to the high-affinity FcεRI receptors on the surface of mast cells and basophils, leading to the release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators.
