Overview
Felbamate is an anticonvulsant (antiepileptic) drug used to treat severe epilepsy, particularly partial seizures in adults and both partial and generalized seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome in children[1][2][3][4]. It is typically reserved for patients whose seizures have not responded to other treatments due to its risk of serious side effects. Felbamate acts primarily by modulating neurotransmission in the brain. Its mechanism of action involves antagonism at the glycine-binding site of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor-ionophore complex, thereby inhibiting excitatory neurotransmission[3][6][8]. Additionally, it potentiates gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-mediated inhibitory responses, providing a dual action on both excitatory and inhibitory pathways[6][8]. This unique combination contributes to its broad-spectrum anticonvulsant activity.
