Overview
Felodipine is a long-acting, oral, small molecule antihypertensive drug of the 1,4-dihydropyridine class of calcium channel blockers. It acts primarily by inhibiting voltage-gated L-type calcium channels in vascular smooth muscle cells, leading to decreased peripheral vascular resistance and vasodilation. This mechanism reduces blood pressure and decreases the workload on the heart. Felodipine is used alone or in combination with other medications for the treatment of mild to moderate essential hypertension. It may also be used off-label for conditions such as Raynaud's syndrome and congestive heart failure. The drug was originally developed by Hässle (a division of Astra AB), later part of AstraZeneca[5][4][6][8].
