Overview
Felodipine + irbesartan is a fixed-dose combination of two antihypertensive agents used for the treatment of high blood pressure. Felodipine is a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker that inhibits the influx of calcium ions through voltage-gated L-type calcium channels in vascular smooth muscle, leading to vasodilation and reduced arterial blood pressure. Irbesartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that selectively antagonizes the type 1 angiotensin II receptor (AT1), preventing vasoconstriction and aldosterone secretion, which also results in lowered blood pressure. The combination targets different mechanisms within the cardiovascular system to achieve additive or synergistic antihypertensive effects. Clinical studies have shown this combination can be effective in lowering blood pressure and may offer additional benefits such as improved sexual function in hypertensive women compared to other combinations[1][3]. This combination is not widely available as a branded product but may be used off-label or compounded.
