Overview

Femdophilus is a probiotic biological agent composed of two specific, clinically documented strains: *Lactobacillus rhamnosus* (GR-1) and *Lactobacillus reuteri* (RC-14). Originally discovered and developed by Dr. Gregor Reid and Dr. Andrew Bruce at Urex Biotech and manufactured by CHR-Hansen, it is traditionally marketed as an oral dietary supplement to support vaginal and urinary tract health in women. The mechanism of action involves the competitive exclusion of uropathogens and the restoration of healthy microbial flora. In clinical research, specifically a Phase 1 trial sponsored by the Lahey Clinic (NCT04077749), the product is being evaluated for intravesical instillation—where the capsule contents are dissolved in saline and delivered directly into the bladder—to prevent catheter-associated urinary tract infections (UTIs) in patients with chronic indwelling catheters.
