Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Feminax is a brand of over-the-counter (OTC) medications specifically formulated for the relief of period pain (primary dysmenorrhea) and associated symptoms such as abdominal cramps, headache, and muscular pain. Originally developed by Bayer and subsequently acquired by Prestige Consumer Healthcare, the brand encompasses several different formulations. The most prominent current products include **Feminax Express**, which contains ibuprofen lysine for rapid absorption, and **Feminax Ultra**, which contains naproxen. These active ingredients belong to the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) class and work by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes. This inhibition reduces the synthesis of prostaglandins in the uterus, which are the primary mediators of the uterine contractions and inflammatory responses that cause menstrual distress. Historically, the brand also included a combination product containing paracetamol, codeine, caffeine, and hyoscine, though the brand's current identity is centered on NSAID-based relief.
