Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fenchone is a naturally occurring monoterpenoid ketone found in the essential oils of various plants, notably fennel and wormwood. It is a colorless oily liquid with a camphor-like odor and exists as two enantiomers: d-fenchone and l-fenchone. Fenchone has been used experimentally as an ingredient in medications for treating kidney, bladder, and urinary tract stones. Pharmacologically, it exhibits diuretic activity—significantly increasing urinary output and electrolyte excretion—as well as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, wound-healing, antidiarrheal, antifungal, antinociceptive (pain-relieving), bronchodilator effects. Its mechanism of action includes Potassium channel protein activation along with dual inhibition of phosphodiesterase (PDE) and Calcium channel protein in airway smooth muscle. Fenchone also demonstrates antimicrobial properties by inhibiting biofilm formation in bacteria and fungi[1][2][5][6].
