Fencrolone is a small molecule pyrrolinone derivative developed by Yunnan Shippurui Bioengineering (also known as Yunnan Seapur Bioengineering) for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. It primarily functions as a non-selective cholinesterase inhibitor, targeting both acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) to increase synaptic acetylcholine levels and improve cognitive function. Beyond its cholinergic effects, fencrolone has demonstrated neuroprotective properties in preclinical studies, including the ability to antagonize 5-HT2A receptors and protect neurons from amyloid-beta-induced toxicity and oxidative stress. The drug has been evaluated in Phase II clinical trials in China for patients with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer's disease, where it is administered as an oral tablet.
