Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fenitrothion is a broad-spectrum organophosphate insecticide and acaricide. It was introduced in 1959 by Sumitomo Chemical and Bayer. It acts as an acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor, disrupting the nervous system of insects and other organisms by preventing the breakdown of acetylcholine, leading to hyperexcitation and death. Fenitrothion is widely used in agriculture to control chewing, sucking, and boring pests on crops such as cereals, rice, cotton, and vegetables. It is also used in public health programs for vector control (e.g., against malaria-carrying mosquitoes and plague-carrying fleas) and in veterinary medicine as an ectoparasiticide for livestock and dogs.
