Fennel seed is a botanical substance derived from the plant *Foeniculum vulgare*. It is widely used in traditional medicine and dietary supplements for its carminative, antispasmodic, and phytoestrogenic properties. The primary active constituent of fennel seed is trans-anethole, which acts as a selective agonist of the TRPA1 ion channel and exhibits estrogenic activity. Fennel seed is commonly prepared as an infusion, tea, or extract to treat gastrointestinal disorders such as infantile colic, postoperative bowel ileus, and primary dysmenorrhea.
