Fenofibrate is a lipid-lowering agent belonging to the class of fibric acid derivatives (fibrates). It is primarily used to reduce elevated levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in patients at risk for cardiovascular disease. Fenofibrate acts as an agonist of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα), which increases the oxidation of fatty acids and enhances the clearance of triglyceride-rich particles from plasma. This results in decreased levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and very-low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C), while increasing high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). Although fenofibrate effectively improves lipid profiles, there is no conclusive evidence that it reduces cardiovascular morbidity or mortality. It can be used alone or in combination with statins for patients with mixed dyslipidemia[2][4][7].
