Overview

Fenofibric acid is a lipid-lowering agent in the fibrate class, used primarily to treat severe hypertriglyceridemia, primary hypercholesterolemia, and mixed dyslipidemia. It works by activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPAR-alpha), which increases lipolysis and elimination of triglyceride-rich particles from plasma while reducing apoprotein C-III production. This results in decreased levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), total cholesterol, triglycerides, and apolipoprotein B, with an increase in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). Fenofibric acid is the active metabolite of fenofibrate and is available as oral tablets or delayed-release capsules under brand names such as Fibricor and Trilipix. It may be used alone or with other lipid-lowering agents to reduce cardiovascular risk factors associated with dyslipidemia[1][2][4].
