Overview

Fenoterol is a short-acting beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist and bronchodilator primarily used for the treatment and prevention of bronchospasm associated with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other obstructive airway diseases. It acts by stimulating beta-2 adrenergic receptors in the lungs, leading to relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle, bronchodilation, and increased airflow. Fenoterol also has some activity at beta-1 adrenergic receptors but is relatively selective for beta-2. The drug can be administered via inhalation (metered-dose inhaler or nebulizer) or orally. It was developed by Boehringer Ingelheim and introduced into clinical use in the early 1970s. While effective as a bronchodilator, its use has been associated with increased cardiovascular risk compared to other short-acting beta agonists[1][3][4][5][6].
