Overview

Fenoverine is a phenothiazine-based small molecule antispasmodic agent primarily indicated for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome and pain due to smooth muscle spasm. It acts as a non-anticholinergic synchronizer of smooth muscle motility by modulating the calcium gradient across muscular cell membranes—regulating both the influx of extracellular calcium and/or release from intracellular stores. This mechanism inhibits asynchronous spasmodic contractions without significantly affecting normal physiological motility in the intestine. Fenoverine does not act as a muscarinic or opiate-receptor antagonist[1][2][6][8]. It has been used in clinical trials for irritable bowel syndrome and is available under several brand names.
