Overview

Fenoxaprop‑ethyl is a selective, systemic, post-emergence herbicide used to control annual and perennial grass weeds in crops such as cereals, rice, soybeans, potatoes, cotton, beans, beets and other vegetables. It belongs to the aryloxy phenoxy-propionate class of herbicides. Fenoxaprop‑ethyl is rapidly absorbed by leaves and translocated throughout the plant. Its primary mechanism of action is inhibition of acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase), an enzyme essential for fatty acid synthesis in grasses; this disrupts lipid metabolism leading to yellowing and death of susceptible weeds within two to three weeks after application. The compound exists as chiral R‑ and S‑isomers; the R-isomer (fenoxaprop-P) is the active form[1][4][5][8]. Developed originally by Hoechst (now part of Bayer), it has been marketed under various trade names globally.
