Fent-VAST is a preclinical monoclonal antibody developed by Hepione Therapeutics designed for the prevention and treatment of fentanyl overdose. Developed using the company's Vaccine and Antibody Specificity Technology (VAST) platform, the antibody acts as a peripheral sequestering agent or "molecular sponge." Upon administration, it binds to fentanyl molecules in the bloodstream with high affinity and specificity. This binding increases the effective size of the fentanyl complex, preventing it from crossing the blood-brain barrier. By sequestering the drug in the periphery, Fent-VAST prevents fentanyl from reaching and activating μ-opioid receptors in the central nervous system, thereby averting the respiratory depression that leads to fatal overdoses.
