Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that inhibits cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzymes, which are responsible for the synthesis of prostaglandins that mediate pain and inflammation. The combination is designed to leverage the rapid onset of intranasal fentanyl with the longer duration of action of ibuprofen to provide consistent analgesia throughout an emergency department visit.
