Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fentanyl + sevoflurane is a combination of two anesthetic agents used together to induce and maintain general anesthesia, particularly in surgical settings. Fentanyl is a potent synthetic opioid analgesic that acts primarily as a mu-opioid receptor agonist, providing strong pain relief and sedation[6][8]. Sevoflurane is a volatile halogenated inhalational anesthetic that induces unconsciousness by modulating multiple ligand-gated ion channels in the central nervous system, including potentiation of GABA(A) and glycine receptors and inhibition of excitatory neurotransmitter receptors such as glutamate and nicotinic acetylcholine receptors[7]. When combined, fentanyl reduces the minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) required for sevoflurane to achieve anesthesia, allowing for lower doses of sevoflurane while maintaining effective anesthesia. This combination can improve induction conditions, reduce aversive behaviors at induction, shorten induction time, and provide synergistic analgesia; however, it may also increase the risk of respiratory depression or other adverse effects if not carefully monitored[1][2].
