Overview

Fentanyl iontophoretic transdermal system is a patient-controlled analgesia device designed for the short-term management of acute postoperative pain in adult patients requiring opioid analgesia in the hospital setting. The system uses iontophoresis—a process that employs a mild electrical current—to deliver fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid agonist, across intact skin into systemic circulation. Upon patient activation (by pressing a button), the device delivers a 40 mcg dose of fentanyl over 10 minutes, with up to six doses per hour and a maximum of 80 doses or 24 hours of use. Fentanyl acts primarily as an agonist at the µ-opioid receptor in the central nervous system to produce analgesia. The device offers needle-free administration and is intended for use only under medical supervision within hospitals[1][3][4][6].
