Overview

Fentanyl ITS (Ionsys) is a specific formulation of the synthetic opioid analgesic fentanyl, delivered via an iontophoretic transdermal system. This device allows patient-controlled administration of fentanyl through the skin using a mild electrical current (iontophoresis), typically for short-term management of acute postoperative pain in hospitalized adults. Fentanyl acts primarily as a potent agonist at the mu-opioid receptor in the central nervous system, producing analgesia and sedation. The Ionsys system is designed to be used only in hospital settings under medical supervision and is removed before discharge[8]. Fentanyl itself is 50–100 times more potent than morphine[1][4][6].
