Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fentanyl pectin is an intranasal spray formulation of the potent synthetic opioid fentanyl, specifically designed for the rapid management of breakthrough pain. It utilizes the proprietary PecSys™ delivery technology, which incorporates a low-methoxyl pectin that reacts with calcium ions on the nasal mucosa to form a thin, adherent gel. This gel-mediated delivery modulates the absorption of fentanyl, providing a rapid onset of analgesia while minimizing the risk of nasal runoff or rapid systemic "dose dumping." Originally developed by Archimedes Pharma (now part of Kyowa Kirin), the product is marketed under the brand names Lazanda and PecFent. It is primarily indicated for breakthrough cancer pain in opioid-tolerant patients, though it has been investigated for other acute pain applications, such as during outpatient cystoscopic procedures.
