Drug intelligence / Profile preview
KW-2246 is a rapidly-disintegrating, sublingual formulation of fentanyl developed for the treatment of breakthrough pain in cancer patients who are already receiving opioid analgesics for chronic pain. It acts as an agonist at the mu-opioid receptor (OPRM), providing prompt and potent analgesia due to rapid absorption via the oral mucosa. The drug was developed by Kyowa Hakko Kirin under license from Orexo AB and is marketed under the brand name Abstral in several regions outside Japan. In Japan, it underwent clinical trials and regulatory review for use as rescue medication in breakthrough cancer pain[1][2][5][7].
