Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fentora is an opioid analgesic formulation of fentanyl citrate designed for buccal administration using the proprietary OraVescent delivery system. Developed by Cephalon (now a subsidiary of Teva), it is specifically indicated for the management of breakthrough pain in opioid-tolerant patients with cancer. The OraVescent technology utilizes an effervescent reaction to adjust the local pH, which enhances the rate and extent of fentanyl absorption through the buccal mucosa compared to standard oral formulations. While primarily used in oncology, it has been evaluated in Phase 3 trials for breakthrough pain in chronic non-cancer pain conditions, such as back pain and osteoarthritis, although its use in these populations remains restricted due to safety and abuse concerns.
