Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fermented Amomum xanthioides with Lactobacillus casei (also known as LAX) is a bioenhanced botanical extract developed by researchers at Daejeon University and Se-Myung University. It is produced by fermenting the seeds of Amomum xanthioides, a traditional medicinal herb, using the probiotic bacterium Lactobacillus casei as a starter culture. This fermentation process significantly enriches the extract's total phenolic and flavonoid content, enhancing its therapeutic efficacy. LAX is being investigated for the treatment of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), obesity, and metabolic syndrome. Preclinical studies demonstrate that LAX mitigates high-fat diet-induced weight gain, adiposity, and hepatic steatosis. Its multi-targeted mechanism of action includes the suppression of lipogenesis (via downregulation of SREBP-1 and GPAM), activation of lipolysis (via PPAR-alpha and AMPK-alpha pathways), improvement of insulin sensitivity (via upregulation of GLUT2, GLUT4, and insulin receptors), and reduction of hepatic inflammation and oxidative stress (by lowering TNF-alpha, IL-6, IL-1beta, ROS, and MDA levels).
