Overview

Fermented barley extract is a dietary supplement derived from the fermentation of barley (Hordeum vulgare) using various microorganisms such as Lactobacillus species. The fermentation process increases the content of certain bioactive compounds, including proteins and polyphenols, while reducing sugars and lipids compared to unfermented extracts[5]. Fermented barley extract has demonstrated antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties in preclinical studies. It suppresses oxidative stress by enhancing antioxidant enzyme activities (such as catalase and superoxide dismutase), modulating Nrf2 protein levels in the liver, and reducing markers of inflammation like interleukin-1β, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-α, nitric oxide, and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine[1][2][4]. Animal studies suggest potential benefits for metabolic syndrome (improving insulin sensitivity and lowering triglycerides), hypertension (lowering blood pressure), obesity (increasing brown adipose tissue mass/thermogenesis), gastric mucosal protection against injury or ulceration via antioxidative mechanisms comparable to ranitidine[2][4][5]. The main active ingredients are believed to be polyphenols and other phytochemicals produced or enriched during fermentation. Fermented barley extract is primarily marketed as a food supplement rather than a pharmaceutical drug.
