Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fermented brown seaweed is an investigational nutraceutical derived from the edible brown algae, *Alaria esculenta*, also known as winged kelp. It is being studied for its potential health benefits, particularly its effects on glucose metabolism and gut health. Brown seaweed is a rich source of bioactive compounds, including minerals, polyphenols, and dietary fibers such as fucoidan, laminarin, and alginate. The fermentation process is intended to improve food safety, shelf-life, and sensory properties, as well as potentially enhance the bioavailability and activity of its components. A clinical trial is evaluating whether intake of fermented brown seaweed can lower postprandial blood glucose levels and favorably influence the composition of the gut microbiota in healthy individuals.
