Overview

Fermented cha-miang extract (FCME) is a processed botanical extract derived from the leaves of *Camellia sinensis* var. *assamica*, a tea variety native to Southeast Asia. The fermentation process, which produces a traditional product known as 'Miang' in Northern Thailand, enhances the extract's antioxidant profile, particularly its ability to scavenge ABTS radicals. FCME is characterized by a high concentration of polyphenols and catechins. Pharmacological studies in animal models indicate that FCME exerts potent anti-obesity and anti-diabetic effects, including the reduction of body weight, plasma insulin levels, and insulin resistance. It also improves lipid profiles by lowering total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL-cholesterol while increasing HDL-cholesterol. Furthermore, FCME has been shown to decrease hepatic fat accumulation, suggesting potential applications in the management of metabolic syndrome and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
