Fermented deglycyrrhizinated licorice is an orally administered, trial-specific botanical preparation derived from licorice root that has undergone fermentation and removal of glycyrrhizin. It has been investigated by Helwan University for diabetic neuropathy and early diabetic polyneuropathy. The studied preparation was described as containing α-amylase activity, with one randomized study evaluating it as an oral α-amylase enzyme-replacement approach; however, its complete chemical composition, standardization method, manufacturer, and disease-modifying mechanism have not been publicly established. A Phase 2 dose-ranging study evaluated daily doses of 400 mg to 1,200 mg for painful diabetic neuropathy, while another randomized study evaluated a 500 mg twice-daily oral preparation containing approximately 2,500 IU/g α-amylase activity in early diabetic polyneuropathy.
