Overview

Fermented germinated brown rice (FGBR) is a functional food and dietary supplement candidate produced by fermenting germinated brown rice (GBR) with probiotic bacteria, specifically *Lactobacillus acidophilus*. It is being investigated for its potential chemopreventive effects against colorectal cancer (CRC). The fermentation process is thought to enhance the bioactive properties of GBR, leading to increased anti-inflammatory and pro-apoptotic activities. In preclinical models of colorectal carcinogenesis, FGBR has demonstrated the ability to reduce the formation of preneoplastic aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and sialomucin-producing ACF (SIM-ACF). Its mechanism of action involves the suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β, and the modulation of apoptotic pathways by upregulating Bax and cleaved caspase-3 while downregulating the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2.
