Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fermented ginkgo biloba seeds are derived from the *Ginkgo biloba* tree, an ancient species native to China. Historically, ginkgo seeds have been utilized in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for various conditions, including respiratory issues, bladder infections, and skin ailments. Unfermented ginkgo seeds contain potentially toxic and allergenic compounds such as ginkgotoxin and ginkgolic acids, which can limit their direct consumption. The fermentation process, often involving microorganisms like *Bacillus subtilis natto* and *Lactobacillus plantarum*, is employed to enhance the safety and nutritional profile of the seeds. This process significantly reduces the levels of undesirable compounds while increasing the concentration of beneficial bioactive components, including flavonoids, soluble proteins, and reducing sugars. Research indicates that fermented ginkgo biloba seeds exhibit enhanced antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Preclinical studies suggest potential therapeutic applications in areas such as lipid-lowering, anti-obesity effects, and improved liver health, primarily by modulating lipid metabolism and mitigating oxidative stress and inflammation.
