Overview

Ferric cation (Fe3+) is the oxidized, trivalent ionic form of iron. It is a fundamental inorganic ion involved in a wide array of biological and chemical processes. In biological systems, it plays a critical role in iron metabolism, electron transfer reactions, and as a component of various proteins and enzymes. Its ability to form complexes with organic ligands, such as siderophores (e.g., acinetobactin, enterobactin) and porphine, is central to its function in microbial iron uptake, host-pathogen interactions, and enzyme catalysis (e.g., cytochrome P-450). Beyond biological roles, ferric cation is studied for its involvement in material science, environmental remediation (e.g., sorption by natural materials), and food processing (e.g., color fixation in olives).
