Overview

Ferric chloride is an inorganic compound with the formula FeCl3. It appears as an orange to brown-black solid that is slightly soluble in water and highly corrosive when wet[2][7]. Ferric chloride acts primarily as a coagulant and oxidizing agent. Its main mechanism of action in medical and industrial applications is to promote coagulation by neutralizing negatively charged particles, leading to aggregation and precipitation. In medicine, it has been used topically as a hemostatic agent to control superficial bleeding by causing protein denaturation and vessel occlusion at the site of application[1]. Industrially, it is widely used for water purification (removal of suspended solids), sewage treatment, etching copper in printed circuit board manufacturing, and as a reagent in chemical synthesis[7][8]. Ferric chloride can be hazardous if ingested or inhaled; it causes burns on contact with skin or eyes due to its corrosive nature[5].
