Ferric citrate is an iron-containing phosphate binder and iron replacement product used primarily to control serum phosphorus levels in adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who are on dialysis, and to treat iron deficiency anemia in adults with CKD who are not on dialysis. It works by binding dietary phosphorus in the gastrointestinal tract, forming insoluble ferric phosphate that is excreted in the feces, thereby reducing intestinal absorption of phosphate. Additionally, it replenishes body iron stores to support red blood cell production. Ferric citrate was approved by the FDA in 2014 and is marketed under the brand name Auryxia. The drug consists of complexes between ferric ions (Fe3+) and citric acid ligands, which enhance both its solubility across a range of pH values and its bioavailability as an oral iron supplement[1][2][3][4][5][6].
